New arrival! - Hot stone massage

Picture
Hot stone therapy, technically termed geothermotherapy, has been used for centuries as a form of massage or healing therapy. It’s history can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians as well as the native Americans who used stones in their ‘rights of passage’ as well as using heated stones in their sweat lodges which were used to purify one’s spirit. The Hawaiian people used lava stones wrapped in leaves for healing and meditation and the female healers of the Mapuche tribes used black river stones for spiritual healing, divination and pain relief. Throughout history the effects of using heated stones on the body has been researched but it was Mary Nelson of Tuscon Arizona who first introduced the use of hot and cold stones in her massage work. She also incorporated Zen philosophies and cultural traditions of east Polynesia and she called this form of massage LaStone therapy.

Hot stone massage follows the principles of Swedish massage but with the addition of stones that have been warmed. It is a holistic approach which means the whole body, mind and spirit is taken into account not just the symptom. It is a very comforting, relaxing and natural treatment and it is safe for most individuals (there are some contra indications and these will be discussed at time of booking) The stones used are basalt stones and this type of stone is used primarily as they retain their heat. The stones are placed on and around the body for example they are placed on the back, the back of the neck and behind the knees. Whilst the heat from the stones is transferred to the body other hot stones are used to massage the body.

The benefits of hot stone massage include

Deep relaxation

Alleviates stress

Improves circulation and increases blood supply to the muscles.

Toxins and waste are eliminated more quickly

Tension in connective tissue is released

The heat from the stones can penetrate 3-4cm into the muscle and can relieve pain

It is said that one massage stroke given by the therapist with a hot stone is worth ten normal massage strokes and the effects last longer than a conventional holistic massage. Hot stone massage is a wonderful relaxing treatment and is a great way to help you to relax and unwind.
