5/11/2013 What is Reflexology?![]() One of the services we provide here at Louisa Brown Holistic therapies is reflexology. Reflexology is a holistic therapy that treats the person as a whole rather than just focusing on the symptoms of the physical problem. Holistic therapies takes into account the emotional, social and spiritual aspects of a person's needs as well as the physical. Reflexology has a long history, there is evidence it was used in China as far back as 4000BC as well as in Egypt at around the same time. The North American Indians have practised a form of foot therapy for thousands of years. Reflexology is based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet and hands that correspond with different areas of the body. There are thousands of nerve endings in the feet and each corresponds to a part of the body, when pressure is applied to these areas it stimulates the movement of energy along the nerve channels and helps to restore balance throughout the whole body. The theory is that reflexology helps the body to restore balance in the body naturally. Usually, after a reflexology treatment you may fell less tense and more relaxed. You might also notice that you get a good nights sleep (better than usual!) and that your general mood is lifted and your overall sense of well being improving. Many people think that reflexology is just a foot massage, it is much more than this. Research has been carried out into the benefits of reflexology including in the the reduction of pain, improvement of blood flow, how it can aid post operative recovery and in easing child birth and pregnancy symptoms. It is a powerful therapy which has been shown to have a very positive effect on health and well being. When a part of the body is not working at its best, a sensitive area will be found in the part of the foot or hand that corresponds to that part of the body. By working over sensitive reflexes through a course of reflexology treatments the tenderness will usually decrease as the body starts to function properly again as it achieves homoeostasis. The best way to see if reflexology works for you is to try it for yourself! It can be beneficial for many symptoms, a recent article in the Daily Mail states an increasing number of women claim reflexology has helped them conceive and a medical study has been launched to discover if the claims are true. It can also be beneficial for sufferers of the following: Stress related conditions Hormonal imbalance Back pain Anxiety Improves circulation Preparation for birth Insomnia Digestive disorders Migraines Arthritis Asthma Even if you do not suffer from any ailment, reflexology is a wonderfully relaxing treatment. Most of us lead busy lives and have little time to ourselves so why not relax and unwind with a reflexology treatment and have a little 'you time' If you have any questions or would like to book a reflexology session please call Louisa on 07966688465 Comments are closed.
